Saint Cyprian is known for his role as an early Christian bishop and martyr, and for his contributions to Christian thought and practice.
Born in 190 to wealthy pagans, St. Cyprian converted to Christianity at age 56 and was ordained a priest a year after converting. He become a bishop of Carthage against his will and led North African Christians during persecution from Rome. He is considered to be the first bishop-martyr of Africa and is the Patron Saint of North Africa.
He was martyred for his faith on September 14, 258 in Carthage. His feast day is September 16th.
