Three gifted liturgical songwriters, Kevin Keil and Barney Walker Gael Berberick, have come together to release Through the Eyes of Faith, an eclectic new collection of music for the liturgy. Based on years of friendship and partnership in music ministry, this collaboration has produced a wonderful variety of musical forms, from traditional hymns, choral anthems and newly arranged spirituals to folk-, pop- and gospel-style songs. The 14 songs are suitable for funerals and other special liturgies, as well as seasons throughout the year. For Advent and Christmas, there is the upbeat and contemporary "Emmanuel Carol" and "In a Manger Lowly," a touching new arrangement of "Away in a Manger." For Easter, there's the gospel-style a cappella "The Angel Rolled the Stone Away." Opening with the ringing of church bells and a simple, somber organ part, "Behold, before Our Wond'ring Eyes" is a haunting, a cappella setting of a Lenten hymn text by Genevieve Glen, OSB. "Enter with a Song" is a majestic and rousing gathering song. Proclaiming that "we believe this is Jesus, through the eyes of faith," the title song is a tender piano-, flute-, and cello-based Communion hymn. Gael and Barney had already collaborated on a number of liturgical songs before meeting Kevin. After spending time together at pastoral music conventions and composer forums, the three developed a wonderful reciprocity and began to combine their talents on new compositions. The good fruit of this teamwork has come to light in Through the Eyes of Faith, a welcome and distinctive addition to the repertoire for worship and prayer.
