Agnes Bojaxhiu was born August 26, 1910 in Albania. At an early age, Agnes felt the call to help others, and left for Ireland to join the sisters of Loreto, known for their work in India. She took the name Teresa, the Spanish form of Theresa after Saint Therese of Lisieux. In 1929 Sister Teresa arrived in Calcutta, India. In 1946, she sensed Jesus calling her to serve Him in the “poorest of the poor.” After obtaining permission to leave her order, Sister Teresa founded the Missionaries of Charity. She opened hundreds of orphanages, hospices, and homes for drug addicts, prostitutes, outcasts and the needy around the world. After suffering greatly from heart and lung illnesses, Mother Teresa died on September 5, 1997. Pope Francis canonized Saint Teresa of Calcutta on September 4, 2016.
