Devotion to the Divino Niño began in recent times in Bogota, Colombia, with a priest named Father Giovanni Rizzo. He was assigned with the task of raising funds for the construction of a new church. After many unsuccessful attempts, Father Rizzo prayed in front of a statue of Our Lady, Help of Christians. He prayed to the Baby Jesus, asking Him with all his heart to help him. It seemed as though Jesus stretched out His arms, reaching towards Father Rizzo, saying “take me with you. I want to accompany you.” From that day, Father Rizzo became the great apostle of the Most Holy Child. In 1935, he discovered a beautiful statue of the Infant Jesus in a store. The statue depicted Jesus wearing a pink tunic with his arms open wide, as if He was reaching out for someone to hold Him. At the base of the statue were the words “Yo reinare,” or “I will reign.” This statue was placed in Father Rizzo’s newly constructed church. Many people who prayed in front of the statue began to report miraculous cures and favors.
