Saint Francis of Assisi
Born at Assisi in 1181
Died at Portiuncula 1226

Giovanni Bernardone was born the son of a wealthy cloth merchant. He was later renamed Francesco (the French one) because his mother was from Provence and his father had been in France at the time of his birth. As a young man he became a soldier and was captured and imprisoned for a year. He returned to Assisi a changed man. One day while praying he seemed to hear an image of Christ say to him, “Francis, repair my falling house.” This he did by selling cloth from his father’s warehouse to pay for the work. Disowned by his father for doing this, he took up a life of poverty. He founded the Franciscan Order in 1212. Along with his spiritual student, Saint Clare, he founded the Order of the Poor Clares. He experienced the stigmata while praying on Mount La Verna in 1224. He was a poet who composed hymns and a friends to animals and nature. He died at the age of forty-five and was canonized two years later. He is the patron saint of peace as well as birds and animals, Italy and the environment.
