Saint Peter
Born in the early years of the first century at Bethsaida on the Sea of Galilee
Died at Rome c.64
Peter was named Simon and he and his brother were fishermen. It was Andrew who introduced his brother to Jesus who named him Cephas (the rock). Peter was the rock upon which He would build his Church and to whom He would give the keys to the kingdom of heaven. In the group of the apostles, Peter is always named first and he became the leader of the Christian community of Jerusalem. He was the first Pope of the Catholic Church and was martyred in Rome during the reign of Nero. He is the patron of fishermen and is prayed to for long life. His feast day is June 29.
