Born around 270
Died at Myra, (Dembre, Turkey)

Nicholas is one of the most popular saints in the world and is the patron saint of children, newlyweds, students and pawnbrokers. He is associated with the spirit of generous giving and is known as the protector and patron of Russia as well as many other countries and groups, around the world gifts are given on his feast day. His nickname Santa Claus is derived from the Dutch, Sinte Klaas and was brought to North America by the Dutch settlers. As a bishop he transformed his see with his energy, piety and miracles. In one legend, he came to the rescue of three impoverished sisters by throwing three bags of gold into their rooms. The money was used to pay their dowries and thus save their honor. This is the source of the pawnbrokers symbol, the three golden balls. In art Nicholas is often shown with the three balls. His feast day is December 6.
